About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington regulates fire sprinkler system contractors under RCW 18.160, administered by the State Patrol's Office of the State Fire Marshal. The Specialized Level U scope is narrow — installing, inspecting, repairing, and testing the underground fire-service main (NFPA 24) from the source to the base of the riser, with no design work.

The license bond is a public-protection guarantee. It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Washington (the obligee). If a certified contractor violates the licensing law and someone is harmed, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay continuous for the life of your certificate, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep your $10,000 filing in force.

RCW 18.160 (Fire Sprinkler System Contractors)RCW chapter 18.160 governs fire sprinkler system contractor licensing in Washington, administered by the state director of fire protection (the State Patrol's Office of the State Fire Marshal), with detail in WAC 212-80. RCW 18.160.090 sets the licensee's surety bond at a $10,000 penal sum, and WAC 212-80-078 applies that $10,000 figure to Level 3 and Level U contractors. Confirm the amount on your license application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington Level U sprinkler bond? The premium is $100 — set by our carrier's rate book for the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every Level U contractor. The $10,000 is set by RCW 18.160.090, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000?No. You pay $100. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information for this bond. Most applications approve instantly.
Who requires it?The Washington State Patrol, Office of the State Fire Marshal, requires it to license a fire protection sprinkler system contractor under RCW 18.160.090; WAC 212-80-078 sets the Level U amount at $10,000.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the certificate. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your certificate never lapses over a missed email.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
