About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the branch bond actually guarantees

Texas regulates driver education through TDLR under Education Code Chapter 1001. A licensed provider must post a $10,000 bond for its main operation, and a separate $5,000 bond for each branch location before that branch may operate — this page is the branch bond.

The bond is a student-protection guarantee. It stands behind the provider’s obligations to students at that location — principally the refund of prepaid tuition and fees if the school closes or fails to deliver the course — and compliance with the driver-education rules.

TDLR requires the bond information to match the branch license exactly: the school name, legal ownership name, and physical address. Because TDLR files the wet-ink original, we mail it to you to sign and submit. If the surety pays a student claim, you repay the surety.

Tex. Educ. Code ch. 1001 (TDLR)Texas driver education providers are licensed by TDLR under Education Code Chapter 1001. A provider files a $10,000 bond for its main operation and a separate $5,000 surety bond for each branch location before that branch operates. The bond must match the branch license (school name, ownership name, and physical address), and a continuation agreement is filed at each renewal. Confirm the amount on your TDLR application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Texas driver-ed branch bond? The premium is $125 flat — set by our carrier’s rate book for this specific bond, the same for every branch location. The price you see is the checkout price.
Do I pay the $5,000?No. You pay $125. The $5,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid student claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why is the original mailed?TDLR files a wet-ink original for branch bonds, and the Principal (you) must sign it before filing. We mail the original and email a PDF copy the same day.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information at all — small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need it.
Does the bond have to match my license exactly?Yes. TDLR requires the school name, legal ownership name, and physical branch address on the bond to match the branch license exactly. We issue it that way — send us the licensed details and we’ll mirror them.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
