About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Maryland taxes beer at the wholesale level, and the Comptroller requires a licensee who sells or delivers beer to post security for that tax. This bond is a tax-payment guarantee: it stands behind the beer tax you collect and owe, plus any penalties and interest.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Maryland through the Comptroller (the obligee). If you file late, fail to remit the tax, or violate the alcoholic beverage tax laws, the Comptroller can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the state, you repay the surety. Licensees who file on time and remit the tax treat the bond as a licensing formality. We track it and notify you ahead of expiration so your $1,000 filing stays continuous.

Tax-General §13-825 (Comptroller)Under Md. Code, Tax-General §13-825, the Comptroller may require a manufacturer or wholesaler who sells or delivers beer to post security for the alcoholic beverage tax, generally in an amount of not less than $1,000 for beer. The bond is conditioned on timely filing of returns and payment of all beer taxes, penalties, and interest. Confirm the exact amount on your Comptroller notice or license application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Maryland beer tax bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this specific bond. The bond amount is fixed at $1,000, and every beer licensee pays the same $100.
Do I pay the $1,000?No. You pay $100. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the Comptroller if you fail to remit the beer tax — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? The Comptroller of Maryland, as security for the alcoholic beverage (beer) tax under Tax-General §13-825. It is filed with your beer license.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information — there's no credit section to fill out. Most applications like this approve instantly; if a check were ever needed, it would be a soft pull only, never affecting your score.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as your license requires the tax security. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices ahead of expiration, with autopay available.
