About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A wholesale motor vehicle auction dealer operates the dealer-only auctions where licensed dealers and wholesalers buy and sell inventory. The Auto Industry Division licenses these operators and conditions the license on a $50,000 surety bond, the same amount as a retail dealer.

The bond is a title-and-compliance guarantee: it stands behind the auction's handling of title and funds and its compliance with Colorado's motor vehicle laws. It's a three-party arrangement among you (the principal), the surety, and the State of Colorado together with the dealers and parties who could be harmed by a failure.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Auctions that pass clean title and account for funds treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

C.R.S. Title 44, Article 20 (form DR 2830)Colorado wholesale motor vehicle auction dealers are licensed by the Department of Revenue's Auto Industry Division and Motor Vehicle Dealer Board under Title 44, Article 20, which conditions the license on a $50,000 surety bond filed on form DR 2830. The wholesale auction category covers dealer-only auction operators — confirm the category and amount with the division before you file.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is a wholesale motor vehicle auction dealer? It is the Colorado license category for operating dealer-only vehicle auctions — where licensed dealers and wholesalers buy and sell inventory, not the retail public. The Auto Industry Division licenses it and requires the $50,000 bond.
Do I pay the $50,000?No. You pay $400 — the flat price our carrier sets for this bond. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What does the bond guarantee? That the auction passes clear title, accounts for funds, and follows Colorado dealer law. If it fails to and someone is harmed, they can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply as part of underwriting — never a hard inquiry, no impact on your score. It informs approval, not price: the $400 rate holds regardless of what the check shows.
When does it renew?Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. You'll get renewal notices 60 and 30 days before expiration, with autopay available, and the bond must stay active for your license to stay valid.
