About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses aircraft dealers through the WSDOT Aviation Division and conditions the license on a $25,000 surety bond. The bond is a public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your faithful performance as an aircraft dealer and your compliance with chapter 14.20 RCW, RCW 47.68.250, and the aircraft excise tax law (RCW 82.48.100).

It’s a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Washington (the obligee). If a dealer defaults on its statutory obligations and the state incurs costs or damages, the state can recover against the bond.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license. Aircraft dealer licenses run January through December, with renewals due by January 31 — let the bond lapse and your license lapses with it, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

Chapter 14.20 RCW (WSDOT form 900-041)Washington aircraft dealers are licensed by the WSDOT Aviation Division and must file a $25,000 surety bond (WSDOT form 900-041) running to the State of Washington, conditioned on faithful performance as an aircraft dealer and compliance with chapter 14.20 RCW, RCW 47.68.250, and RCW 82.48.100. Common questions.

How much is the Washington aircraft dealer bond? The premium is $1,937.50 flat, set by our carrier’s rate book for the fixed $25,000 bond amount — the same for every dealer. The $25,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000?No. You pay $1,937.50. The $25,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.

Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information — there’s no credit section at all. Most applications for this bond approve instantly.
When does it renew?Aircraft dealer licenses run the calendar year, with renewals due by January 31, and the bond must stay active the whole time. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so your license never lapses over a missed email.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
