About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the dealer bond actually covers

Washington licenses commission merchants, dealers, brokers, and buyers of agricultural products through the Washington State Department of Agriculture under chapter 20.01 RCW. Growers consign their crops to these middlemen and trust them to pay — so the state requires a financial backstop before the license issues.

Under RCW 20.01.210, the applicant files a surety bond, executed by the applicant as principal and a qualified surety, running to the state for the benefit of qualified consignors of agricultural products. If a dealer fails to pay a grower for products received, the harmed consignor can recover against the bond.

The amount is set by WSDA from your annual dollar volume and the commodity you handle — generally a $10,000 minimum for most products, with a higher $15,000 minimum for dealers in hay, straw, or seed. The bond protects the consignors, not you: if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Confirm your required amount on your WSDA application.

RCW 20.01.210 (chapter 20.01 RCW)RCW 20.01.210 requires a commission merchant or dealer in agricultural products, before licensure by WSDA, to file a surety bond running to the state for the benefit of qualified consignors. The amount is set by the director from the applicant’s dollar volume and commodity — generally a $10,000 minimum for products other than livestock, hay, straw, or seed, with a $15,000 minimum for dealers in hay, straw, or seed. Confirm your required amount on your WSDA application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington agricultural products dealer bond?Pricing is 1% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum. The bond amount itself is set by WSDA from your annual dollar volume and commodity — generally a $10,000 minimum, or a $15,000 minimum if you deal in hay, straw, or seed. Enter your required amount at the application to see your exact price.
Who does the bond protect?Qualified consignors of agricultural products. Under RCW 20.01.210 the bond runs to the state for their benefit, so a grower who isn’t paid for products you received can recover against it. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Why is my amount higher than the minimum?WSDA scales the bond to your dollar volume, and sets a higher floor for hay, straw, and seed dealers. The amount on your application reflects your reported volume and commodity — send it to us and we’ll issue exactly that.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply — it’s never a hard inquiry and never affects your score. It doesn't change your price — pricing is 1% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum; enter your bond amount at the application to see your exact number.
How fast can I get it?Most clear within 1–2 business days; an underwriter reaches out within 48 hours if anything else is needed. We issue the executed bond ready to file with your WSDA license application.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
