Missouri regulates professional boxing, sparring, wrestling, kickboxing, full-contact karate, and mixed martial arts through the Office of Athletics within the Division of Professional Registration, under Chapter 317, RSMo. House Bill 1388 (effective August 28, 2018) expanded the definition of a combative sports promoter and added the bond requirement.
A promoter must file a $25,000 surety bond (or an irrevocable letter of credit) as part of licensing. The bond guarantees the promoter pays all athletic taxes and license fees owed to the state, and the expenses of contestants and officials for the events it puts on — if a promoter stiffs the state or its fighters and officials, they can recover against the bond.
It is a three-party guarantee, not insurance for you: if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The state uses fixed renewal dates (July 1), so your term aligns to the statutory cycle.
