About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Minnesota licenses private detectives and protective agents — the security-guard and protective-services trade — through the Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services under Minn. Stat. 326.32 to 326.339. A license application must be accompanied by a $10,000 surety bond to the state under Minn. Stat. 326.3382.

The bond ensures payment of damages suffered by anyone harmed by the agent’s violation of the law or by a willful and malicious act in the course of the business. You are the principal, the surety stands behind you, and the State of Minnesota together with harmed members of the public are the protected parties.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license — let it lapse and you can be referred for action against the license. It is not insurance for you: if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. We track your $10,000 filing and notify you 60 and 30 days before renewal.

Minn. Stat. 326.3382 (Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services)Minn. Stat. 326.3382 requires an applicant for a private detective or protective agent license to execute a surety bond to the State of Minnesota in the penal sum of $10,000 and file it with the Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services. The bond secures payment of damages for the licensee’s violation of law or any willful and malicious act in the conduct of the business.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Minnesota protective agent bond? The premium is $100 — the fixed price for the $10,000 bond, set by our carrier’s rate book, the same for every agent. There is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000?No. You pay $100. The $10,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many agents finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information for this bond. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need one.
Is this the same as the private detective bond?It is the same statute and the same $10,000 amount. Minn. Stat. 326.3382 covers both private detective and protective agent licenses through the same Board — this page is for the protective agent (protective services) license.
