About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the fuel tax bond actually covers

Wisconsin taxes motor vehicle fuel through licensed suppliers and others liable for the tax, who remit to the Department of Revenue. Under Wis. Stat. § 78.11, the Department may require any person liable for the tax to place security — before or after a license is issued — as a guarantee of the fuel tax, interest, and penalties they may owe.

When required, the security can be a surety bond payable to the state, and the amount may not exceed three times the licensee's average monthly tax liability. The Department can increase or decrease the amount as it deems necessary. If an applicant or licensee fails to place the security, the Department may refuse to issue or may revoke the license.

A surety canceling the bond stays liable for amounts accrued for 60 days after filing notice — so we keep your filing continuous. We issue the amount DOR set, priced at 1% of the bond amount with a $100 minimum, and the application collects no credit information.

Wis. Stat. § 78.11Wisconsin Statutes § 78.11 lets the Department of Revenue require any person liable for the motor vehicle fuel tax to place security — which may be a surety bond payable to the state — to secure payment of the tax, interest, and penalties. The amount may be increased or decreased as the Department deems necessary but may not exceed three times the licensee's average monthly liability. Confirm the amount on your DOR notice.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Wisconsin fuel tax bond?Pricing is 1% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum. The amount itself is set by the Department of Revenue and capped at three times your average monthly fuel tax liability. Enter the figure at the application to see your exact price.
Do I always need this bond? No. The Department of Revenue requires security at its discretion under Wis. Stat. § 78.11 — often for a new licensee, or after a late filing or unremitted tax. Many licensees never post a bond.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information. Most applicants approve instantly; if a check ever runs on a larger bond amount, it's a soft pull that won't touch your score.
How is the amount capped? The bond may not exceed three times your average monthly fuel tax liability. The Department can raise or lower the figure within that cap as it deems necessary.
Where do I file it?With the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, as security for your motor vehicle fuel license. We issue the executed bond ready to submit.
