Wisconsin requires anyone who contracts to build, or to repair or remodel, a one- or two-family dwelling to hold a Dwelling Contractor certification from the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Part of that certification is proof of financial responsibility — and a surety bond is one of the accepted forms.
Under Wis. Stat. § 101.654, the bond provides security to any person who sustains a loss because the contractor failed to comply with the Uniform Dwelling Code or another applicable ordinance. A full certification calls for a bond of at least $25,000; a restricted certification can use a smaller amount.
The certification and bond are issued for a one-year period. The bond is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.
