About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses vessel dealers through the Department of Licensing under RCW 88.02.710. The bond is a consumer-and-state-protection guarantee: it stands behind the way you handle vessel title transfers, taxes, and your dealings with buyers.

The bond runs to the state of Washington, is approved by the attorney general as to form, and is conditioned that you will conduct business as required under the vessel-registration chapter. Harmed buyers and the state can recover against it.

The penal sum is $5,000. A small dealer selling fewer than sixteen vessels a year, each with a retail value of $2,000 or less, is exempt from the bond — so if you fall under that threshold, confirm with DOL before buying. If the bond is exhausted or canceled, your license is automatically canceled, so we keep it continuous and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington vessel dealer bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond, not a percentage formula. The $5,000 bond amount is set by RCW 88.02.710, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $5,000?No. You pay $100. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed buyers — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Do all vessel dealers need this bond? Most do. The statute exempts a dealer selling fewer than sixteen vessels a year, each with a retail value of $2,000 or less. If you are above either threshold, you need the bond — when in doubt, confirm with DOL.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information at all. Most applications approve instantly.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license — if it is canceled, your license is automatically canceled. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
