About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses plumbing contractors through the Department of Labor & Industries, and RCW 18.106.410 conditions that license on a $6,000 continuous surety bond with the State of Washington named as obligee.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Washington (the obligee), with the public protected. The bond stands behind your obligation to pay taxes and wages and to perform the plumbing contracts you take on; a harmed party can recover against it.

The bond is continuous — if the surety cancels or withdraws, your plumbing contractor license is automatically suspended until a new bond is filed and approved. So we keep it continuous and notify you well ahead of any lapse. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.

RCW 18.106.410 (Plumbing contractor — Surety bond)RCW 18.106.410 requires each applicant for a plumbing contractor license to file with the Department of Labor & Industries a continuous $6,000 surety bond (issued by a surety meeting chapter 48.28 RCW), with the State of Washington named as obligee. Cancellation or withdrawal of the bond automatically suspends the license until a new bond is filed and approved.
