About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A fire sprinkler contractor bond is a customer-protection guarantee. Under RCW 18.160.090, before the State Fire Marshal licenses you to install, inspect, maintain, or service fire protection sprinkler systems, you post a bond standing behind the contracts you sign.

The bond is conditioned that you will pay any customer who obtains a judgment against you for breach of a sprinkler-system contract — install, inspect, maintain, or service. It runs to the state of Washington, with your customers as the protected parties.

The statute sets the bond at $6,000 when your business is restricted solely to NFPA 13-D or 13-R systems (one- and two-family and low-rise residential), and $10,000 otherwise. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are the certificate-of-competency classifications your staff hold; the bond rides on the licensed contractor. It must stay active for the life of your license — we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

RCW 18.160.090 (State Fire Marshal)RCW 18.160.090 requires a fire protection sprinkler system contractor to file a surety bond with the State Fire Marshal, running to the state of Washington, conditioned that the contractor will pay any purchaser who obtains a judgment for breach of a sprinkler-system contract. The penal sum is $10,000, or $6,000 where the business is restricted solely to NFPA 13-D or 13-R systems.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Level 1 fire sprinkler bond? The premium is $100 flat, one-time — set by our carrier's rate book for this specific bond, not a percentage calculation. The same for every residential-restricted contractor.
Do I pay the $6,000?No. You pay $100. The $6,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a customer wins a judgment against you for breach of a sprinkler contract — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why is this one $6,000 and not $10,000?RCW 18.160.090 sets the bond at $6,000 when your business is restricted solely to NFPA 13-D or 13-R (residential) systems, and $10,000 otherwise. If your scope is broader, you need the $10,000 version instead.
Is there a credit check? The application has no credit section at all — it collects no credit information. Most applications approve instantly.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
