About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington regulates motor freight and household-goods carriers through the Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) under RCW 81.80. The commission may require a household-goods carrier to file a surety bond to protect the people whose property it moves.

The bond is conditioned on the carrier compensating shippers and consignees for money belonging to them that comes into the carrier’s possession in connection with the transportation service — and, more broadly, for proper handling of the goods entrusted to it. At $10,000, it is a fixed-amount filing.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the carrier / principal), the surety, and the State of Washington with your customers as the protected parties. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington common carrier bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier’s rate book for this bond, the same for every carrier. The $10,000 is the bond amount, not the price, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000?No. You pay $100. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What does the bond protect? It protects shippers and consignees — your customers — for money belonging to them that comes into your possession in connection with the move, and for proper handling of their goods. Under RCW 81.80, the UTC can require it of a household-goods carrier.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information for this bond. Most applications approve instantly.
How fast will I have it?Fixed-amount bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many carriers finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
