Virginia conditions many public offices on a bond. The general rule in Code of Virginia § 49-1 is that every bond required of a person undertaking an office, post, or trust shall be conditioned on the faithful discharge of the duties of that office. Localities require bonds for officers handling public funds under § 15.2-1512 and related provisions.
