About this bond

What the CNG/LNG fuel tax bond actually covers

Texas taxes compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) used as motor fuel under Tax Code Chapter 162, administered by the Comptroller of Public Accounts. The tax is collected by a licensed CNG/LNG dealer when the fuel is delivered into a vehicle’s supply tank — and the dealer must post a continuous bond standing behind that tax.

The bond is generally two times the maximum amount of tax that could accrue on CNG or LNG produced, purchased, acquired, sold, or delivered in a reporting period, with a $30,000 minimum and $600,000 maximum. The Comptroller can require more if it sees undue risk to revenue.

Anyone who delivers CNG or LNG from their own storage into their own vehicles must also be a licensed dealer. The Comptroller sets your exact amount; pricing starts from $225 with one soft credit pull that informs approval, never affecting your score.

Tex. Tax Code § 162.361 (compressed natural gas)Under Texas Tax Code § 162.361, a licensed CNG/LNG dealer that the Comptroller requires to post security must file a continuous bond equal to two times the maximum tax that could accrue on compressed or liquefied natural gas in a reporting period. The minimum is $30,000 for a dealer described by Section 162.357(a) — the Comptroller prescribes the minimum for other license holders — and the maximum is $600,000 unless the Comptroller believes there is undue risk of revenue loss. The Comptroller sets the exact amount — confirm it on your notice.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Texas CNG/LNG fuel tax bond?Premiums are variable and start from $225. The amount is set by the Comptroller — generally twice your maximum monthly CNG/LNG tax, between a $30,000 minimum and a $600,000 maximum. Enter the figure on your notice and your exact price is set at the application.
Who needs a CNG/LNG dealer bond?Any business licensed to collect the Texas tax on compressed or liquefied natural gas delivered into a vehicle’s fuel tank. Even fueling your own fleet from your own storage requires a dealer license, and the Comptroller can require this bond as a condition of it.
Is there a credit check?Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not your price — premium is fixed at 0.75% of the bond amount, regardless of credit tier. The check itself never touches your credit score.
Is this the same as the diesel fuel tax bond? No. CNG/LNG dealers are bonded under Chapter 162’s compressed natural gas provisions, and diesel fuel is bonded separately under § 162.212. Different licenses, different bonds — both run through the Comptroller, and we write both.
Where do I file it?With the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, alongside your CNG/LNG dealer license. We issue the executed continuous bond ready to submit.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
