About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

North Dakota licenses motor vehicle dealers through the NDDOT Motor Vehicle Division under N.D.C.C. ch. 39-22, and conditions the license on a $25,000 surety bond. The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with the dealer-licensing law and the taxes and fees you owe the state.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the State of North Dakota together with harmed buyers (the protected parties). The bond is continuous and constitutes a new $25,000 obligation for each annual license period you are licensed.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The same $25,000 amount applies whether you are a used or new dealer. Dealers who deliver clean title and pay their taxes treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

N.D.C.C. ch. 39-22 (form SFN 2933)North Dakota motor vehicle dealers are licensed by the NDDOT Motor Vehicle Division under N.D.C.C. ch. 39-22, which conditions the license on a $25,000 surety bond running to the State of North Dakota (filed on form SFN 2933), conditioned on the dealer's faithful compliance with the chapter. The bond is continuous and constitutes a new $25,000 obligation for each annual license period.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I pay the $25,000?No. You pay $250 — the price our carrier sets for this bond. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed buyers; it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? The NDDOT Motor Vehicle Division, as a condition of a motor vehicle dealer license under N.D.C.C. ch. 39-22. No active bond, no license.
Is the amount different for used vs. new dealers? No — the same $25,000 bond amount applies to used and new motor vehicle dealers under N.D.C.C. ch. 39-22. The premium is $250 either way.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply — never a hard inquiry, no impact on your score. It informs approval; the price stays $250 per year of term either way.
When does it renew?Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. The bond is continuous and renews a new $25,000 obligation each license period. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses.
