A public adjuster bond is a policyholder-protection guarantee. You negotiate insurance claims on behalf of people who've just had the worst week of their year — North Dakota wants a financial backstop that you'll handle their claims and their money honestly.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of North Dakota (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties. If an adjuster mishandles client funds or violates adjuster law, the harmed client can recover against the bond.

N.D.C.C. 26.1-26.8-11North Dakota requires public adjusters to be licensed by the Insurance Department under N.D.C.C. ch. 26.1-26.8, which conditions the license on a $20,000 surety bond running to the State for the benefit of any person damaged by the adjuster. The requirement took effect August 1, 2019 (HB 1219), and the bond may not be cancelled without 60 days' written notice to the commissioner. Confirm the current amount on your application.
