About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Michigan licenses driver education providers through the Secretary of State under the Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act (Act 384 of 2006). A commercial vehicle driver education provider — a truck/CDL training school — must post a $50,000 bond, the largest tier in the act (other schools post $20,000 or $40,000 depending on enrollment).

The bond protects students, financing agencies, and government agencies against monetary loss caused by fraud, cheating, or misrepresentation in the conduct of the provider's business. A claim is paid only after a court of record enters judgment for fraud, cheating, or misrepresentation, and the surety's total liability never exceeds the $50,000 face amount.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must be maintained continuously to protect students' contractual rights; the surety can cancel only on 30 days' written notice to the Secretary of State, so we track it and notify you well ahead of expiration.

MCL 256.629 (Act 384 of 2006)Under MCL 256.629, the bond of a commercial vehicle driver education provider must be in the principal sum of $50,000.00, with surety approved by the Secretary of State. It indemnifies students, financing agencies, and governmental agencies for loss from fraud, cheating, or misrepresentation, payable only after a court judgment, with aggregate liability capped at the bond amount. Confirm your provider category and amount on your application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Michigan truck driver education provider bond? The premium is $500 — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond, the same for every provider. The $50,000 bond amount is set by statute (MCL 256.629), so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $50,000?No. You pay $500. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why is my bond $50,000 when other driving schools post less? The Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act sets the bond by provider type. Commercial vehicle (truck/CDL) providers post $50,000; ordinary driver education schools post $20,000 or $40,000 depending on enrollment. Confirm your category on your application.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply — never a hard inquiry, no impact on your score. It informs approval, not price: the premium stays $500 either way.
When does it renew? The bond must be maintained continuously to protect students. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license filing never lapses.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
