What the snowmobile title bond actually does
When you buy or inherit a snowmobile and the paperwork is missing, lost, or insufficient, Michigan lets you establish ownership with a bonded certificate of registration under MCL 324.82105. You post the Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond (TR-121), the Secretary of State issues the registration, and the bond protects anyone who later proves a superior claim.
The bond is in an amount equal to twice the value of the snowmobile as determined by the Secretary of State. It is conditioned to indemnify the Secretary of State, any prior owner, and any subsequent purchaser against expense, loss, or damage — including reasonable attorney fees — arising from issuing the registration or any defect in your title.
The bond runs three years. If a valid ownership claim is paid, you repay the surety — it is not insurance for you, it is a guarantee that backs your bonded registration. Note: Michigan generally does not require a bond for a snowmobile valued at $2,500 or less; if yours is below that, confirm with the Secretary of State before buying.
