About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the solicitor bond covers

Maryland regulates paid fundraising under the Maryland Solicitations Act, administered by the Secretary of State. A professional solicitor is paid to solicit charitable contributions, and a public safety solicitor solicits on behalf of police, fire, or similar public safety organizations — and both must register and file a $25,000 bond.

The bond runs to the State of Maryland and protects donors and the charities the solicitor works for against fraud, misrepresentation, or failure to account for the contributions raised. It is a consumer- and charity-protection guarantee, not insurance for the solicitor.

The amount is a flat $25,000 set by the Act — the same for every registrant. (The Act lets a registrant submit a $25,000 irrevocable letter of credit instead, but a surety bond is usually the cheaper route, since you pay a small premium rather than tying up the full amount.) We issue the $25,000 bond for $375, with no credit fields in the application.

Md. Business Regulation Article, §6-501 et seq. (Solicitations Act)Under the Maryland Solicitations Act (Business Regulation Article, Title 6), a professional solicitor and a public safety solicitor register with the Secretary of State and file a $25,000 surety bond (or a $25,000 irrevocable letter of credit) running to the State of Maryland. The bond is renewed annually with registration. Confirm the current form with the Secretary of State.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Maryland professional solicitor bond? The premium is $375 — the same for everyone, set by our carrier's rate book for this bond. The $25,000 bond amount is set by the Solicitations Act, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000?No. You pay $375. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Can I use a letter of credit instead? The Solicitations Act lets you file a $25,000 irrevocable letter of credit in lieu of the bond. A surety bond is usually cheaper — you pay a small premium rather than having a bank tie up the full $25,000.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information at all. Fixed-amount registration bonds like this one rarely need one; if a check is ever required it is a soft pull that never affects your credit score.
When does it renew?Maryland solicitor registrations and bonds run one year. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your registration never lapses over a missed email.
