On Veterans Day 2020, New York States’ Outdoor Rx Act became law. The new
statute called upon the New York State Division of Veterans’ Services (hereinafter
DVS) to assemble the Outdoor Rx Committee (“Committee”), comprised of public
sector and private sector subject-matter experts and produce a report reviewing
issues related to veterans’ abilities to access State parks, lands, and facilities. In
2021, DVS delivered the Committee’s report to the Governor and to the
designated members of the New York State Legislature recommending continued
engagement and support for community-based organizations working to increase
access for veterans to medical treatment and nature-based therapy and programs
on New York public lands, with particular focus on inclusion, equity, and
accessibility for minority, marginalized, and disabled veteran populations.
