The IPNF intends to have an open mine adit closed by backfilling/culvert installation at a mine located
on the St Joe Ranger District, of the IPNF. This mine presents a
hazard to public health & safety as well as to wildlife and this adit closure is in the interest of the
public. The adit needs to be closed with a combination grated pvc pipe/backfill type closure due to
extremely unstable and hazardous conditions.
The contractor must re-establish a 750-foot old mining road by clearing/grubbing and stockpiling vegetation, then stabilize and widen it for safe equipment passage. The adit will be closed by installing a 10.5' x 2.8' PVC pipe with a grate horizontally and backfilling/compacting rock around it using an excavator. Approximately 150-200 cubic yards of rock will be needed for backfilling. The Forest Service will provide the HDPE pipe with grate; the contractor provides all tools, equipment, fuels, and supplies. After closure, the access road will be obliterated and/or blocked with rocks. A short report and photos of the completed closure are required.
